FINDING A JOB IS EASIER FOR GRADUATES

F

Jobs

Easy for university graduates to find their first job? Twenty-three months after graduation, two-thirds of bachelor’s graduates and more than three-quarters of those with a master’s degree were employed full-time or part-time, according to the latest Revival survey by the Department of Education and Advanced Learning. of Quebec, published in 2017.

For those who graduated in 2015, it took an average of 9 weeks to get a job, according to the same survey.

Graduates in high demand

“We are asking  candidates with more advanced skills than before,” says Denis Morin, professor in human resources management at UQAM. The development of artificial intelligence is driving strong demand for graduates in health, engineering and pure and applied sciences. This trend will increase in the coming years, according to him.

Graduates of technical college programs also benefit, Denis Morin continues. And the figures tend to confirm this: 10 months after their studies, less than 4% of technical training graduates were looking for work, according to the Revival survey at the college in technical training conducted with graduates of the 2014- 2015.

While 60% were employed, more than a third chose to continue their studies, mostly in an area related to their initial training.

The importance of the savoir-to be

But graduation is not everything, insists Denis Morin. Beyond the technical skills, employers are looking for “soft skills”, i.e everything that is about the skills, such as the ability to work in a team and manage conflicts. This is especially true in areas that require specialization.

“Employers will look for compatibility between the candidate and their organization,” . They will try to get to know someone better to see if they will work well with their boss and other employees. ”

For some young graduates, finding a job to match their career aspirations may seem like a challenge. “Those who have a diploma tend to stay on unemployment for a shorter time. ”
